Old Joe Clarke

Monday, March 18th, 2013

Below is a video of my arrangement of “Old Joe Clarke,” on one mandolin. This tune has been a staple in old-time jam sessions for over a hundred years. Although originally written for the fiddle this song is very accessible on all stringed instruments. For all you players out there, stay posted for guitar tracks, slowed down versions, and tabs.

Cattle in the Cane, on new HD camera

Monday, January 21st, 2013

Here is a great old time fiddle tune. My version can be viewed in the video below. Stay posted for slowed down parts and tabs so you can play it at your local jams. Interesting tune starting on A then going to G, so some A mixolydian gets played. Also the B part goes to an A minor making for a nice contrast.

Morning project, Salt Creek recording and slide show.

Sunday, November 4th, 2012

Below is a video I created using Sony Vegas. The song is Salt Creek, a traditional fiddle tune, I play rhythm guitar and lead mandolin. I plan on having Jenna Mobley, a great fiddle player in town record over this, giving it that high and lonesome sound. The slideshow was an experiment of sorts. So many tools at our disposal in the information age.

This is a favorite of mine, “Whiskey Before Breakfast.”

Saturday, August 18th, 2012

Below is a video of me playing an arrangement of, “Whiskey Before Breakfast.” I am playing it full speed here. If there is interest I would be happy to post tabs.

This tunes seems to come up a lot at jam sessions so it is a good one to have a simple lead part worked out too. Enjoy, questions and comments welcome.

Ragtime Annie

Thursday, August 9th, 2012

Here is a performance video where I play an arrangement of Ragtime Annie that I learned from listening to Doc Watson. It is a fun song to play and sounds great with a fiddle player. Doc’s playing is a major influence in the way I play the guitar.

Here’s lesson number two in my series for the beginner mandolinist.

Friday, July 20th, 2012

Using songs seems to be the most fun, and in turn, the most useful way to teach beginning concepts. I have chosen, “Red Haired Boy,” as the first song I will focus on. It is a traditional instrumental tune that is often played at jam sessions. It also translates well to many instruments. Below is my lesson on how to play the rhythm to the “A” part.

To hear the song played through you can view the video below. There is a slowed down intro using the same chords before we kick into the song at full speed.

Jackson’s Reel

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Here is an Irish tune that lends itself nicely to Guitar. For you musicians out there I used drop D tuning to get the drone sound. It helps “Jackson’s Reel,” sound a bit fuller on the arrangement played here by me on one guitar, one take.
